Flag and country vs NBA dream
ITS been six or seven months, since our very NBA aspirant 7”3’ Kai Sotto had recovered from an ACL injury and rejoined his Koshigawa Alphas last February to fulfill his remaining games before bidding goodbye to the Japan B-League to continue chase his long-time “NBA Dream”, At the same time forgoing his duty for flag and country with Gilas Pilipinas, which is now in the brink of a possibility missing out a slot for the FIBA World Cup in Qatar next year.

Gilas kick-off its World Cup qualifying run with a back to back wins over Guam, but the momentum halted by a back to back losses to New Zealand and Australia in the succeeding windows wherein the National ended the first windows with 2-4 win loss card behind the Aussies (6-0( and the Kiwis (4-2), And take note, those series of defeats were in the absence of Kai, despite his available to play for the nationals, But his NBA dream got in the way.
Kai, in the previous occasion, has repeatedly skipped duty with Gilas in search for that lifetime shot at the bigger stage and the biggest pay-check of his pledging career. Maybe, aside from that, he’s also preparing his plans for the future. Just recently tied the knot with movie and television actress Rere Madrid, whose reportedly expecting their first child,
It’s been imminent, whenever Kai is not playing, one a reason or another, Gilas’ game turned in disarray like a flank of sheep, lost a shepherd in the wilderness, Kai definitely is the missing part of the puzzle as described by head coach Tim Cone.
Having heard and read, pros and cons, with regards to Kai’s current predicament, This corner can’t help but express our own views about the matter. First, lets checked out opinions from the experts themselves, Like one podcaster and blogger, whom I believed knows more inside and outside of the NBA, urging Kai foregone his NBA journey and instead help and fulfilled his Gilas duty and this NBA dream will come when its really to be and it come when least expected,
A former PBA commissioner and turned blogger, made noticed a personal view for the 7-3 behemoth something to emulate as he mention in his post in the social media. referring to Serbian and Denver Nuggets might of power Nikola Jokic, who is one of the best player in the world, while pointing out that he continues representing his country in the WC qualifying despite his NBA commitment,
Likewise a former PBA player expressed his own view as he urges Kai’s dad, (Erwin) to make an effort to least convince his son to help the nationals’s quest to qualify for the World Cup and eventually put country back in the Olympics, And by the way, the FIBA World Cup will serve at the same time as qualifier for 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Gilas needs to be the best Asian finisher in the said tournament, Japan done it, by finishing seventh during the 2023 World Cup held in Manila,
Gilas Pilipinas. which have last made it to the Olympics in 1972, during the Munich Games. Since 2014, and the launching of the Gilas program, The national made their way back in the world stage but fell short to make it to the quadrennial games,
And for my two-cent opinion for thus corner, let quote one the PBA Legend and former Philippine Sports Commissioner (PSC) and three-time MVP Ramon Fernandez, who once uttered, it is with deep privilege to be called upon serve the country, And that no amount of monetary or anything should get in the way nor an issue in fulling your duty, With that I rest my case your Honor,
