Chino won the plus 89 kilograms men’s and Sydney ruled the minus 80kg women’s while their father, Paolo, president of Sambo Federation of the Philippine got the silver in the men’s master minus 98kg.

The Davao-based Tancontian clan made the competition a family affair all of them won medals in their first international stint in Olympic year and the year of the Dragons.

Chino, 23, shamed local boy Patrick Grooth in front of his countrymen in the winner-take-all finals after disposing Danny Carrot of Great Britain in the semifinals.

Few minutes after Chino savor his triumph, his sister Sydney, 25, took the gold in plus 80kg women senior by beating Francesca Asphey of France in the finals.

Their morale is high and fighting spirit, the Davao-based sambo fighters best their rivals on the way to the podium and showed to their European rivals they are world class in sambo originated in Russia that was used by the Russians as self-defense against threat.

“Our mission and goal win medals for the Philippine and for the Filipinos. We’re happy we made it,” said Chino.

“We hope to continue bringing honor to the country this year. This is our commitment,” said optimistic Paolo.

The competition is part of their training and preparation for the Asian Indoor and Mixed Martial Arts Games in Thailand.

The competition of the Tancontian clan bankrolled by Philippine Sports Commission and supported by wasthe Philippine Olympic Committee.
