A WIDE array of chess-loving individuals from various walks of life is supporting sports icon Manny Pacquiao in his herculean task of pushing for genuine chess development.
Pacquiao, who earned worldwide recognition as the only eight-division world boxing champion, is also an active chess player and organizer of local and international tournaments.
With Pacquiao as chairman, the newly-established National United Chess Federation of the Philippines (NUCFP) also boasts of well-known personalities who have what it takes to pursue the much-needed reforms in chess.
Backing up Pacquiao are Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) President-Commissioner Atty. Paul Elauria, who will serve as President; Atty. Cliburn Anthony Orbe, who will act as Vice Chairman; two-time University of Mindanao champion and 2024 National IBP champion Atty. Jose Dionisio “Jong” Guevarra, who will act as Vice President; Pacman Chess Association president Orly Ortega, who will work as Vice President; One Chess Movement founder Ariel Potot, Treasurer; Mr. Tony Aguirre, Auditor; Dr. Melben Jochico, Corporate Secretary; and Atty. Rey Rabago, Assistant Corporate Secretary.
The establishment of the new chess federation was fully supported by no less than super GM Wesley So, who sent words of congratulations from his home in the United States, and GMs Rogelio Barcennila Jr and John Paul Gomez and other IMs and NMs, who are seeking reforms in local chess.
In his statement of solidarity, So lauded Pacquiao and the NUCFP.

"“I’ve heard some interesting news from the Philippines that our boxing hero Manny Pacquiao has declined his appoinment as director and VP of the NCFP. Apparently, he’s has received many complaints about the questionable actions of the federation and the abuses and corruption involving its main officials.”
“I was also informed that a new federation, named the National United Chess Federation of the Philippines (NUCFP) was recently formed with Sen. Pacquiao himself as the head and Chairman."
.“I express my full support to this new federation comprised of reputable chess personalities in the Philippines. I sincerely hope, with confidence, that they will bring about the much needed and long-delayed progress in Phil chess. It’s about time the Philippines reclaims its rightful place in Asian and International chess.”
