The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has tapped Tayabas town in Quezon as a new regional training center for CALABARZON, following the signing of a Usufruct Agreement between PSC Chairman Pato Gregorio and Quezon Governor Helen Tan for the use of a 10-hectare property along Brgy. Baguio.
A multi-purpose sports complex will soon rise in the area, starting with a track and field oval, football field, gymnasium, training center, and diamond fields for softball and baseball.
These facilities will be developed gradually with other sports facilities to expand the town’s capacity as a hub for grassroots and elite sports.
“The said project is expected to strengthen sports development and provide greater opportunities for athletes in CALABARZON to excel in their respective fields,” Governor Helen Tan said.
Chairman Gregorio also emphasized his plan to establish the site as a softball and baseball hub, reviving the country’s rich tradition in these sports, which flourished as far back as the 1900s.
“Mahilig kasi ang Quezon, Batangas, Cavite, at Laguna sa softball. So, gagawin natin itong softball at baseball hub, ‘yung national team dito mag-te-training, dito ‘yung mga competition, at dito maglalaro ‘yung mga bata,” said Chairman Gregorio.
This initiative supports President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s directive to make sports more accessible within communities and expand grassroots platforms for cultivating more national athletes.
Meanwhile, Candon City Mayor Eric Singson is keen on putting up a national training center for archery in his city in partnership with the PSC and World Archery Philippines.
