IN their recent overwhelming victories over a pair New Zealand’s professional ball club from the National Basketball Leaue (NBL), Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone is convinced that they can now moved on or do away from its long-time game-plan, “TriangleOffense” to a better a fast pace ball movement. Really Tim?
Cone was also quoted during a podcast interview that he had dropped the triangle since last year, and build a new team chemistry since they made some changes in the line-up. Maybe coach Tim attributed Gilas’ dominant wins by his wards in a tune-up exhibition matches against the Mnawatu Jets (92-61) and the Franklin Bulls (94-66).
The said matches are part of Gilas’ preparation for the FIBA third window Asian Qualiying roound for World Cup set in November and to be hosted by Qatar. The Nationals are eying to win at least either New Zealand or Australian to boost their chance to make to the tournament proper. Gilas is set to face the Tall Blacks in their home court at Auckland on Friday, before tangling with the Boomers, who will host Gilas in Melbourne on Monday.
Maybe coach Tim based his views on the new game plan he methodically prepared and practiced before the team flown to Auckland, where they executed the game plan to perfection and carefully planned it. With the newly found play-style perfectly working. He didn’t even bothered to send naturalised player Justine Brownlee to play as he sat the bench both games, while 6”8’’ Micheal Philips, who played a limited time have a pair dunks, also rode the bench against the Bulls.
Tim’s new game plan, perfectly carried out, the set-up and the fast paced ball movement with lesser dribbling, while looking an open man, on a better position to shot. Even on a one-on-on plays and inside the paint incursion were strongly imposed by big men Junmar Fajardo, E.J Edu and and Justine Baltazar.
Though it was just an exhibition, the Nationals really played according to game plan, All players fielded in, have contributed, except Brownlee. and Philips have four markers against the Jets, but sat out the match against the Bulls along with the naturalised player with a Filipino heart.
Gilas’ new strategy and game plan gave young talents, Carl Tamayo and Kevin Quiambao longer playing time as they strut their wares. The 6-7 Tamayo had 14 and 22 points against the Jets and Bulls, respectively. While Quiambao spread 33 points in two matches.
The last time, Gilas dropped both matches against the Tall Blacks in close-contest before the Nationals fold up in the dying seconds, 61-64.The Boomers, on the other hand, outplayed Gilas in all fronts enroute to 95-66 lopsided win.
I had a hunch, that the 15-time PBA champion mentor has some tricks up in his sleeves when they meet the their second window tormentors. To my curiosity? I really we don’t know. But I’m interested to find out And perhaps, I would likewise find to myself, whether he’s really done with the “Triangle”, really Tim?…
